Sri Lanka produces the best quality spices with exceptional aroma and taste and occupies a prominent place in the world spice trade not only now but in historical times dates back to early times where Arabs monopolized and run the trade. Because of this prestigious position Sri Lanka became attractive and famous in the western world.
The Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board was established under the special provision of Agricultural Act of 1972 and and by special gazette notification no. 2050/14 dated 20th December 2017, this was placed under the Ministry of Primary Industries.
Again on 13th January 2020 by special gazette notification no 2158/3, this was placed under the State Ministry of Export Agriculture.
The present Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board was re-established by a Cabinet paper no. 20/1590/326/014 on 10th November 2020 and is operating to date.
The Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board was established by the Cabinet Memorandum no.20/1590/326/014 dated 10 November 2020 under the State Agricultural Cooperation Act No 11 of 1972.
The foremost objective of setting up this Board was to give a maximum price to the producers of spices and allied products and an affordable price to the consumers.
This is the only government agency entrusted with the responsibility of exporting spices and allied products and certification.
I appreciate very much the effort taken by this Board to strengthen the national economy by taking the spices and allied products to the world market and I would like to extend my warm wishes to the Chairperson of this Board, the staff and all partners in this field for their dedicated services.
Sri Lankan spices or as earlier known Ceylon spices were world famous for the reasons of their uniqueness in taste, persistent aroma and nutrition. They include among others, pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace and turmeric. They are used specially for increasing the flavor, aroma of food & beverage and the medicinal properties provide number of health benefits to the users.
In the early history the spice trade was dominated by Arabs and later by Portuguese who first came to Ceylon as traders and then as rulers. Since then Sri Lankans spice continue to occupy their prominent place. As of now over 90% of the spice and allied products manufactured in Sri Lanka are consumed by the global food & beverage industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the personal care product industry.
The Spice and Allied Products Marketing Board realizing its potentials of the spice industry to contribute to the GNP and GNI engages in promoting local and export markets by purchasing spices at reasonable rates from growers and adding values. By doing this we are not only helping the spice markets to flourish but the growers to get the due prices for their products and increase income.
The Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board was established in August 2021 as a solution to the issues faced by the farmers in remote areas when selling and promoting their produce. Established in the year of 1972, this Board existed as a dormant institution which was limited to a document until 2021.
The intention of the Board is to provide proper solutions to a number of issues including providing maximum prices to the farmer, a relief to the consumer as well as creating foreign market opportunities for quality spices and allied products, market research, coordination, regulation, maintaining nutrition and medicinal quality. Our Board’s model of a balanced portfolio with strong value-added businesses and operational excellence have been the key drivers of our commendable performance. As we continue to meet customers across Sri Lanka and the world, we remain convinced of the huge potential of the Board in the global market. The key will be our ability to remain relevant to our customers, farmers and other stakeholders understand their business needs and perform with rigor to meet those needs.
The Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board has set up 22 branches in Battaramulla, Madiwela, Nugegoda, Pambahinna, Ratnapura, Kalawana, Kiri Ella, Kotamulla and Pallebedda in mere one year. Negotiations have already been held with countries such as Nigeria, France, Russia, Bangladesh and Japan and the US State of California to seize international market opportunities for local spices. We as the Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board currently purchases over 20 million products a month and it has taken steps to expand its branch network across the country in the near future.
